Welcome to The Edge!
This handbook should serve as a quick, but thorough introduction to proper etiquette and behavior while in the school. Master Thorn teaches a very disciplined style of Martial Arts and he takes discipline very seriously.
That being said, we still believe students should enjoy their time at The Edge! We encourage family and friends to come together to share the experience of learning such a magnificent sport.

History and Family Tree
Great Grand Master Jhoon Rhee - 10th Degree Black Belt - Father of American Tae Kwon Do (deceased)
Great Grand Master Jhoon Rhee has been coined the "Father of American Tae Kwon Do". Rhee is responsible for the major expansion of the Martial Arts across the United States with his students pioneer many of the major cities across the nation when the Martial Arts were very new to the United States.

Many of the early Champions in Karate Tournaments and the Kickboxing World are part of family tree coming from Rhee's Lineage. The first National Karate Champion was one of Rhee's very first Black Belts Grand Master J. Pat Burleson.

More can be found on GGM Rhee at www.JhoonRhee.com
Grand Master J. Pat Burleson - 10th Degree Black Belt - Father of American Champions (deceased)
Grand Master J. Pat Burleson was a Golden Gloves boxer who studied Shotokan Karate while stationed in Japan while in the Military. When he came home from the Military there where no places to train and made friends with Grand Master Allen Steen who was training under GGM Rhee and was invited to train under Rhee.

Burleson was placed one belt under Steen and was promoted to the rank of Black Belt 3 months after Steen becoming only the 2nd Black Black promoted by Rhee.

Burleson made a name for himself in the "Blood and Guts era" in karate tournaments becoming the first person to win a National Karate Championships. The times were labeled Blood and Guts because the sport was new, protective gear was invented yet, and there were very few rules to be followed.
More can be found on GM Burleson at http://www.usadojo.com/
Grand Master John Longstreet - 8th Degree Black Belt - Kickboxing / Sport Karate World Champion
Grand Master John Longstreet was winning Adult Competitions in Sport Karate at the age of 14 which at time was more like Full Contact Kickboxing of today. He was the first student to step foot in the Jhoon Rhee Institute >> Mid-American >> National Karate / USA Karate and was their first Black Belt.

Longstreet Trained under GM Worley and GM Carnahan who helped mold his fighting skills into one of the most Dominant Kickboxers of his time.

Longstreet was instrumental in the development of the curriculum and systems that helped Martial Arts students better learn and progress to Black Belt. Longstreet started guiding Master Nathan Thorn as he got close to Black Belt and has been a mentor since.

Grand Master Nathan Thorn - 8th Degree Black Belt - Sport Karate World Champion
GM Thorn, 42 , is the Owner, Master Instructor, and Founder of The Edge Martial Arts started his Martial Arts training in 1987.

Master Thorn started teaching in 1992 and became a Head Instructor in 1999 and has taught full-time since. Thorn is the St. Croix Valley's most successful karate competitor of all time, and one of the most successful competitors in MN’s history. Not only has he made his mark being ranked the #1 Male Black Belt Fighter regionally numerous times, but is also a Multi-time World Champion.

After reviewing Thorn’s impact, abilities, accomplishments and respect as a Martial Artist, Grand Master J. Pat Burleson promoted him to 5th degree confirming that “...Master Thorn is the Best MN has to offer...”. In 2019 Thorn became one of the youngest 8th Degrees ever promoted.
instructors / Our Style of Martial Arts

Our Style
The style you will be learning at The Edge is referred to as American Karate or Mixed Martial Arts. Through his years of training, Grand Master Nathan Thorn has compiled pieces of different styles of the Martial Arts and incorporated them into his teaching style and curriculum to develop students who are more effective in both self-defense and Sport Karate.

Martial Arts School Classroom Guidelines
Uniform and Hygiene
Students are expected to maintain a neat appearance with a clean uniform and good personal hygiene. When entering or exiting the classroom, students should pause, face the class, and bow respectfully. This gesture honors the space, fellow students, and past instructors.
Non-Interruption Policy It's important to avoid disrupting ongoing classes. This means no loud noises, target striking, talking, running, or any behavior that disturbs the class.
School Policy for Pick-Up and Drop-Off of Students Under 13 Skills/Dragons PLAY VIDEO - Kids Program PLAY VIDEO
To ensure the safety and proper supervision of our students, the following policy applies to all children under the age of 13:

  1. Dragons Classes: Students enrolled in our Dragons classes must have a parent or guardian present at all times while in the building if they are not actively participating in class.
  2. Kids Programs: Students under 13 in our kids programs must have a parent or guardian present in the building more than 10 minutes before the scheduled start time of their class. Additionally, a parent or guardian must arrive within 5 minutes of the scheduled end time of the class.
Please Note: Dropping children off outside of these allowable time windows or failure to arrive on time for pick-up will result in a charge of $1.00 per minute for the supervision provided outside of class times. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe environment for all our students.
Class Attendance and Scheduling
Class times are posted in the school and can be taken home. Students should attend their assigned classes and can make schedule changes online, in-person, or by phone. They should be punctual, attend the entire class, and are only excused early in emergencies.
Bowing-In
The highest-ranking student will initiate the class by calling for attention. The lowest-ranking student collects and hands the students' cards to the instructor. Students line up in order of rank, with the highest-ranking on the right. Punctuality is crucial for participation.
Respect and Etiquette
Higher belt students have priority in movement and should be addressed formally. When answering instructors, responses should be prompt and end with "Sir" or "Ma’am." Proper positioning and cooperation during drills are expected.
Lobby Conduct and Noise Control PLAY VIDEO
The school’s open-air design means lobby noise can be distracting. Visitors are asked to keep noise levels low and ensure children remain seated and quiet. Disruptive behavior may result in being asked to leave to maintain a peaceful environment.
When students are waiting for or exiting classes they should do so in the quietest way possible. A rule of thumb is that if you can be heard from the main classroom then you are too loud. Remember that when there are a lot of quiet voices, it still carries loudly into the classroom.
Siblings must remained seated and not wonder the school. If a parent has a child who is not staying seated or is making noice the parent is expected to take the child outside. We will ask families to leave if they cannot keep the lobby peaceful.
Uniforms & Sparring Gear Guidelines
Uniforms - WATCH VIDEO
Initial Uniform
New students start with a lightweight white uniform featuring The Edge Martial Arts school patch on the left chest. As they progress, they can upgrade to a middle-weight blue uniform with the school patch, logo on the back, and the student’s name (first initial and last name).

Club Members Uniforms
Club Members can wear exclusive Blue with Red Trim uniforms. Students under Black Belt who are not on an active club membership may not wear the striped uniforms.

Black Belt Uniforms
Upon reaching Black Belt, students receive a red uniform, a privilege exclusive to Black Belts. As they advance through degrees, they get red uniforms with varying collar colors. At 4th Degree Black Belt, they earn a black uniform, signifying the start of True Master Training.

Uniform Maintenance
Uniforms must be clean and free from odors. Men may choose to wear undershirts; women must wear undershirts, such as T-shirts or sports bras. Modifications, like additional patches or embroidery, need instructor approval. Uniforms should reach the ankle and not be rolled above the mid-forearm. The Edge may require students to purchase new uniforms if their current ones are poorly maintained or improperly sized.
T-Shirt Days
During Open Workouts and Workout Weeks, students may wear an Edge or Team Edge T-shirt instead of the standard Karate Gi Top. Only sleeved T-shirts with the Edge logos are permitted; tank tops and other apparel are not. Edge Hoodies are allowed on workout days. Items with buttons or zippers are prohibited due to injury risks.

Gear and Attire Continued

Headwear Guidelines
In classes, only headbands or bandannas are acceptable. These items should not hinder performance and must be pre-approved, ensuring they are free of inappropriate logos, images, or words.

Jewelry Policy
For safety reasons, jewelry is prohibited in the classroom. This includes watches, bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings. Leave these items in your car or at home. The Edge is not liable for any lost, damaged, or stolen items.

Curriculum Rotation

Each week, the curriculum rotates, allowing students to explore different aspects of their belt level. Attending classes on the same day each week ensures exposure to varying sections. During Monthly Exam weeks, we focus on Workout Week.

Striking Classes - Uniform Requirements
Students will learn the mechanics and techniques specific to their belt level. Striking targets are a key component of these classes. Either Traditional or sparring uniforms are acceptable.

Sparring - Traditional Uniform / Sparring Uniform
Sparring classes require sparring gear. Students must bring their gear to class. If a student forgets their sparring equipment, they may be unable to participate, emphasizing the importance of preparation. Either Traditional or sparring uniforms are acceptable.

Stand-Up Defense Class - Uniform Requirements
Focusing on self-defense while standing, students learn to defend against strikes and grabs. Traditional uniforms are acceptable for all students under Red Belt. Jiu-Jitsu uniforms are mandatory for Red Belt and above.

Grappling Techniques - Uniform Requirements
This session covers ground-based self-defense strategies. Each belt level will practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques for ground control. Traditional uniforms are acceptable for all students under Red Belt. Jiu-Jitsu uniforms are mandatory for Red Belt and above.

Fitness and Workout Classes - Uniform Options
These classes emphasize cardio, resistance training, flexibility, and core strengthening, accompanied by music. Students can wear traditional uniforms, sparring uniforms, Edge T-shirts, or Edge Hoodies.
Instructor Training
Are you interested in becoming a martial arts instructor? Speak with the Head Instructor or School Director to understand the pathway to teaching. While not everyone may be suited for this role, those who show potential can begin training from early belt levels to be ready to instruct by the time they achieve Black Belt.

Belt and Testing Systems

Belt Striping System ( WATCH VIDEO)
Developed by Master Thorn, our belt striping system helps students concentrate on specific sections of their curriculum for belt advancement. The curriculum at each belt level is divided into four stripes: Striking, Sparring, Stand Up, and Ground. Instructors will sign off on student cards when they demonstrate the required skills in these areas.

Earning Stripes
To earn a stripe, students must complete and receive instructor signatures for all parts of the curriculum in one of the four sections. Students are encouraged to attend relevant classes and can request instructors to observe specific skills before class.

Red Stripes for youngers students (WATCH VIDEO)
Students aged 12 and under need to earn a Red Stripe for Respect and Discipline, both inside and outside the classroom. Parents can request the removal of this stripe if they feel their child is not embodying martial arts values outside class. Without a Red Stripe, students cannot progress in curriculum or earn other stripes.

Dragons Program(WATCH VIDEO):
Instructors monitor the progress of 'Dragon' students. Stripes are awarded after class when a Dragon is ready.

Belt Testing Process
Colored belt promotions depend on continuous physical and mental growth in martial arts. Each belt level has a specific curriculum that must be mastered error-free. This includes demonstrating self-discipline and overall improvement in martial arts training.

For belt promotion, after receiving all four Black Stripes for their level, students must perform each section again for a Head Instructor to get Approval to Test. Once approved for all curriculum sections, they're eligible for the next belt test.

Testing Schedules
Gold Belts and lower will schedule tests after class at the school. Green Belts and higher are tested in front of a Black Belt Panel during Monthly Exams. Candidates for Monthly Exams must secure approval and a verified partner a week before the exam.

See Handout “Monthly Exams FAQs” for more information on testing.

Competition

Tournaments
We encourage students to participate in tournaments during their martial arts journey. Tournaments offer a secure and constructive environment for competition, both against others and oneself. Tournament Sparring involves a single-elimination format with competitors placed on a bracket sheet, and elimination means the end of participation for the day.

Tournament Levels
Tournaments vary from state to international levels, involving varying degrees of travel, from local to weekend stays. Participants can choose what best suits them.

Team Edge - National Competition Team (Invite Only)
Team Edge consists of elite competitors from The Edge and occasionally other schools who have shown consistent winning capabilities and represent The Edge well. This team competes nationally.

Competition Team / Classes - Application, Extra Fees, and Specific Gear Requirements
The Edge Competition Team, geared towards those interested in local/regional tournament participation, focuses on tournament sparring. Classes include drills, conditioning, tournament reviews, and education. The team also engages in scrimmage events. Additional fees, specific gear requirements, and an application process apply.
Policy for Transfer Students
Transfer students from other schools start at White Belt and must retest through The Edge’s curriculum, as our martial arts style is unique. They are not subject to time constraints until they reach their equivalent belt level as determined by the Head Instructor. Black Belt transfers are evaluated individually.
Sparring Gear Sales at The Edge
The Edge will always try to offer gear at a competitive rate. Why buy it from The Edge?
  • pay no shipping on items that we do not stock
  • short wait time on ordered items
  • receive a proper fitting session
  • get help with warranty replacements
  • receive discounts off MSRP
Gear purchased outside of The Edge must receive prior approval for use. Be cautious of ill-fitting or low-quality gear from other sources. Although there’s an expense in purchasing gear, it's crucial for safety.

Ranking Exams

What are ranking exams?
Ranking exams are chances for students to be promoted to the next higher belt level. In correspondence with our belt striping systems, students must have all stripes to be considered to test on the exam and then given permission by their Head-Instructor.

When are ranking exams?
Exams are the last Thursday of a month (check calendar for specific dates and/or exceptions). Black Belt Exams are held 3 times per year (April, August, December).

How will I be tested on the exam?
As with the belt striping promotions, you will be asked to perform all of the techniques you have learned from White Belt to your current belt level with full power, speed and full mechanics.

What if I am sick the day of the exam?
Students are encouraged to test if they are feeling well enough to do so. Should you decide that you are not going to test, you can then wait for the next ranking exam.

What if I am late for the exam?
If you show up late for the exam, you will not be allowed to test and will need to wait for the next ranking exam.

How long does the exam take?
Exams can range in length from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours depending on the number of students testing and the belt levels that are being represented. Plan to be at the exam at least 1 1/2 hours.

Is there a cost to test?
Test Fee’s are $30 per student. This traditional fee is for the permission to test in front of The Master Instructor and Black Belt panel and to pay for the belt and certification.
Who will be testing me?
Ranking exams consist of The Edge’s panel of Black Belts along with active instructors. You will be tested by a Black Belt member of the panel. The exam will be run by one of the active high ranking instructors overseeing, approving and signing your promotion certificate.

As a parent, can I take photos during the exam?
Yes -- please photograph as you wish keeping in mind not to be disruptive to the examinees. At the conclusion of the exam there will be an opportunity to take photos of the testing group and to come in to the classroom to take additional photos as you please.

Can I fail the exam?
Because of our belt striping system, each student approved to test on a ranking exam is capable of passing. However, this is a time when students are to try to be faster and stronger and to impress the panel of Black Belts. Students who are not performing, not paying attention or are disrespectful, may still fail the exam.

What do I receive at the exam?
Upon promotion, you will receive your new ranking belt, your promotion diploma, and your testing sheet with comments for improvement and your requirements for the next level.

What should I do with my old belt?
Your old belt is for you to keep. Some students display all of their ranking belts on a belt rack and others store them in a safe place.

Do my class times change?
Depending on your belt level promotion, your class times may or may not change. Check the class schedule to be sure that you come to your newly appointed time if applicable.

Private lessons

Receive the One-on-One
Attention You Need to Excel!

What are private lessons?

Private lessons are 30 or 60-minute individual training sessions with an Edge Instructor. Private lessons focus on your individual areas that need improvement or on things that you don’t understand from regular class attendance.

Who should take private lessons?

Students who have set goals for belt promotions and competition are good candidates for individualized training. Also, students who are attending classes regularly but are struggling to grasp a concept or technique can greatly benefit. Students who are not able to attend class regularly, but want to keep up with their belt promotion progression, may also take private lessons.

Why should I take private lessons?

Private lessons can also help you reach your goals faster and more completely because of the individual attention and focus that is placed on specific mechanics, techniques, sparring or complete forms.

Can I just take private lessons and not take regular classes?

Yes! Private instruction is always available for active or inactive Edge students. Private lesson rates are higher for any student not on a current membership. Students who have never been Edge students may also take private instruction at a higher rate.

How & When can I schedule lessons?

All lessons must be schedule through The Edge. Students may not go around the office to pay for a private lesson.
Lesson times are available before or after regularly scheduled class times as instructor schedules allow.

Sparring Gear

What is Sparring?
Sparring is a chance for you to use your learned combinations on an actual moving target who is striking back at you.

When do I start Sparring?
Students can begin sparring as early as they have full Sparring Gear. The focus is to learn basic, foundational sparring drills. Sparring is required for all belt levels Purple and above.

What do you do during Sparring?
Sparring classes will focus on specific combinations of moves and on footwork. Time is set aside to practice the techniques learned that day or to “free-spar.”

Why is sparring required?
Sparring is essential to truly understand the Martial Arts and to be able to use it effectively as a self defense tool. It allows you to practice the combinations that you have learned in class and also to develop your own defense skills.

What if I don’t want to spar or I am afraid to?
Part of growing as a Martial Artist is to overcome those fears and to find your inner-defense skills. Promotions to higher belt levels (starting at Purple Belt) require that you can demonstrate some sparring skills. Working with your instructor and taking some additional private lessons are the best ways to overcome the fear of sparring and you will find that it is one of the most enjoyable parts of Martial Arts.

What equipment do I need to Spar?
The following are required pieces of gear needed: head gear with face protection cage (all under Black Belts), semi-contact gloves, foot pads, rib guard, shin pads, elbow pads, mouth guard and groin protection (males only). Starter gear packages can be purchased at The Edge with great savings over the retail prices. A large gear bag is recommended.

How much does the equipment cost?
The average set of sparring gear for a beginner is $220. This includes everything you needed to begin sparring during class. Gear bags, mouth guard cases and additional accessories are also available for purchase.

How long does the gear last?
Depending on the specific piece of gear, sparring equipment can last until a student outgrows it if taken care of. Kids may grow out of gear more quickly. Hand and foot pads tend to wear more quickly and need to be replaced once they start to tear. Taping or gluing gear is not allowed--it is not safe to spar with repaired gear.

When do I need to bring my sparring gear to class?
You should bring your sparring gear to class with you every day, even if it is a forms day. There is always a chance that you will need some or all of the gear. If you do not have it on a day that it is needed, you will not be able to participate in that portion of the class.

Are there instructions on how to put the gear on?
Beginner classes with new sparring students will spend time putting on gear and getting faster at putting it on. You don’t want to be the last person in the classroom without your gear on.

What if I lose a piece of my gear?
Lost gear (or any lost items at the school) will be placed in the lost-and-found box. Unclaimed items be held approximately 2 months. Lost sparring items would need to be repurchased if not found. If only one hand or foot pad is lost for example, a new set of either would need to be purchased. We recommend labeling each piece of your gear with your name so that it can be returned to you if it is misplaced or is accidentally picked up by another student.

Competition

Who is eligible to compete?
All belt levels Gold Belt and above are eligible to compete in their respective belt and age divisions.

Why should I compete?
Competition is a great way to demonstrate your skills against other schools and to experience different styles of Martial Arts. Preparation for competition increases your awareness of mechanics and small details that you might not otherwise focus on.

Is it expensive to compete?
Regional competitions are approximately $55-$75 for the first event and $25-$35 for each additional event. The spectator fee for each friend or family member is usually $4-$10. Most tournaments also offer a family discount of $5 for each family member competing. National and World tournaments have similar fees $75-$100 for the first event with the addition of travel expenses.

How do I know which divisions I can enter?
Tournaments allow competitors to compete in as many divisions as are offered and that are designated for their belt/age category. See right for “Division Descriptions” for an explanation of divisions offered.

What do I win?
Traditionally karate tournaments award trophies or medals to first-fourth place for form events. Sparring events have first, second and 2 third place awards. For kids events there often times are trophies or medallions for all competitors. Black Belts can win money on circuits.

Do I need additional equipment or attire to compete?
Your school uniform, weapons and sparring gear are all sufficient for competition. New Ringstar shoes for sparring are not yet approved regionally and so foam foot-pads are still needed. Competition bos, kamas and uniforms are available for order at The Edge—see Master Thorn for complete information.

Can I join the Competition Team?
If you want to compete at regional tournaments then YES you can join the competition team. Competition team members must attend Competition Classes where they will receive the extra training that is needed to perform at the highest level and will learn what it takes to win at tournaments.

Competition Team members will be watched and if they continue to compete as once at Black Belt will be considered for Team Edge.

If I want to compete, what would be a good way to prepare?
Competition class attendance is the first step to preparing for competition. To amp your skill for advanced belts or for faster progression, private lessons are recommended.

How do I know when there is a competition?
State, Regional and World tournament brochures can be found at The Edge. Competitions are also listed on the Team Edge website at www.team-edge.com. MBBL and NASKA websites are also good resources for regional and world tournament information.
